Ricardo Adarraga finishes the season with a great performance in Verbier, a 3rd place in the Swiss Cup and qualifying himself among the top 15 speed skiers of the world.

During the competitions in Verbier Ricardo Adarraga regularly finished among the first 10. It is the first time a skier from Spain qualifies among the first 15 skiers in a FIS Speed Ski World Cup race.
Ricardo Adarraga finished the world cup race 11th with a speed of 195,22 kmh. The winner was the italian Simone Origone with a speed of 198,27 kmh. Origone won his fifth World Cup.
In Ladies category the winner was the swedish Sanna Tidstrand with a speed of 195,02 kmh. Sanna is the winner of the World Cup 2009. The race also saw the brilliant comeback of the american Tracie Sachs who ended second despite having been away from the tracks for some time due to her knee problems.

During the Speed Masters race Adarraga qualified 5th in the semifinal and was even faster then the swiss speed skiing star  Philippe May. In the final bad luck prevented that Adarraga ended up among the first 8 and maybe broke the spanish record (212,14 kmh). Adarraga finished 12th with a speed of 207,7 kmh.

Ricardo Adarraga: “It has been an incredible week. The hard work mentally, physically, material , the change of wax has been rewarded. With every run I felt stronger. I have had a personal duel with my friend Klaus Schrottshammer from Austria. In each run either he was 1 km faster or I. With every run we were pushing each other. The fact that he ended up 3rd in the final leaves the impression what is possible for me. I feel very happy for Klaus.

In the final run the wind blew some powder snow on the track. While skiing down at 207 kmh my skis lost partially contact with the ground, To avoid bad consequences I had to steer with my hands to maintain the line. This has cost me probably between 4 and 5 kmh and that left me with just 207,7 kmh. But all in all I should not complain. A week ago I did not expect to be a bit dissappointed about a 12th place in the Speed Masters race! I skiied 3 times over 200 kmh and I had the honor to be one one of the 29 racers that started for the first time from almost the top of MontFort track.”.

The Speed Masters race was won by the italian Simone Origone. He established the new track record with 216.83 kmh. In the Ladies category the winner was the swedish Sanna Tidstrand with 209.9 kmh

Adarraga won his first trophy in the Swiss Cup. He qualified 3rd with a speed of 201.78 kmh.

“Because my mother is Swiss the Swiss Speed Skiing Federation kindly offered me to join the Swiss Cup competition, where only swiss skiers compete. Switzerland is one of the big Speed Ski nations. To be third in Switzerland is for me as important as beiing the spanish speed skiing record holder. Sharing the podium with Phillipe May and Jonathan Moret, two of the five only men to ski over 250 kmh is for me a great honor. ”

Ricardo Adarraga first spanish skier to pass 200 km/h

Ricardo Adarraga is the first spanish skier to pass the mythical 200 km/h barrier. During the “Pro Mondial Cup” April, 29 2005 in Les Arcs he reached 205.25 km/h, and established the new oficial spanish Speed Ski record. Results

Thirty minutes later starting as forerunner in the 7th run Ricardo Adarraga passed again 200 reaching 213.52 km/h. The fastest speed ever reached by a spanish skier. Certificate
(The FSV only accredits as oficial record speeds reached by qualified competitors, that is forerunners’ speeds are not accredited. In Spain Speed Ski is not ruled by any oficial institution)

“This is incredible! When I started 2 years ago in my first skiing competition I would have never expected to pass the 200 in a 2 year time lap. This would have not been possible without the valuable help of so many experienced Speed Skiers like Tracie Sachs, Philippe May, Xavier Cousseau, Ross Andersson, John Hembel and others. But the biggest thanks go to Magnus Jacobson (www.magnusworld.se) and very special thanks to the most succesful dutch skier ever: Merijn Vunderink (www.speedski.nl). These two guys taught me all I know about Speed Skiing! This one is dedicated to you both!”, Ricardo Adarraga said.
